The experience

The race

UTLAC 250K is the weekend’s most extreme test: the complete mountain circuit of Lake Como, undertaken in self-sufficiency across the Alta Vie del Lario, the Sentiero del Viandante, the Alta Via delle Grigne, and the Larian Triangle.

Across valleys, passes, historic borders, small villages, and remote hamlets, runners need endurance, clear judgment, and sound self-management. This is a long-distance adventure for experienced athletes.

The official GPS track and event markings must be followed precisely. Any shortcut or route cutting results in disqualification and remains the athlete’s responsibility.

NON-PARTICIPATION INSURANCE

  • WEDOSPORT insurance is optional, purchased separately, and governed by the General Rules.

Art. 3 SPECIFIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

UTLAC 250 requires particular mountain experience, personal autonomy, and the ability to handle long race periods and potentially severe weather. The athlete must arrive with technical, physical, and mental preparation appropriate to the length and characteristics of the route.

Art. 4 BIB COLLECTION

Bib collection and race-pack distribution will take place from 10:00 to 16:00 on May 5 (race start day) at Canottieri Lecco.

A valid ID and all mandatory gear must be shown to collect the race bib.

Another person may collect a bib with a plain written authorization signed by the runner and accompanied by a copy of the authorizing runner's ID.

The runner may collect their Pacers' bibs.

Art. 5 MANDATORY GEAR

Introduction: as stated in Art. 3, the race takes place in mountain terrain; runners must understand the terrain and area ahead, be physically and psychologically prepared, and have appropriate equipment.

In addition to personal clothing, accessories, footwear, and food and water reserves, mandatory gear is as follows:

  • Suitable GPS device and charging cables
  • Route track loaded onto the runner's GPS device
  • Cup or glass for drinking at aid stations (think green!). Plastic cups will NOT be provided
  • Race bib, clearly visible throughout the race
  • CamelBak or bottle holder carrying at least one liter of liquids
  • Emergency blanket
  • Whistle
  • Powered-on cell phone
  • Waterproof jacket with built-in hood and a Gore-Tex- or Pertex-type membrane, with at least a 15,000 mm water column, to withstand bad weather during the race
  • 2 headlamps with spare batteries

Mandatory gear will be checked at bib collection.

Random mandatory-gear checks may also be carried out along the route.

The race bib will not be issued to anyone who does not show all mandatory gear to staff.

Art. 6 RECOMMENDED GEAR

Introduction: as stated in Art. 3, the race takes place in mountain terrain; runners must understand the terrain and area ahead, be physically and psychologically prepared, and have appropriate equipment.

In addition to personal and mandatory gear, runners are strongly recommended to carry the following throughout the race:

  • long-sleeved shirt
  • long pants (or pants covering at least the knee)
  • hat, bandana, or beanie
  • gloves
  • suitable footwear
  • waterproof overpants
  • energy bars or solid food
  • a minimum amount of money for possible purchase of extra food at mountain huts
  • elastic bandage
  • microspikes
  • Trekking poles are permitted.

In special conditions, the Organization reserves the right to require runners to carry the specific gear listed above.

Art. 7 MAXIMUM TIME, CUT-OFFS, AND WITHDRAWALS

The maximum time to reach the finish is 90 hours.

The following cut-offs are established:

  • Colico, km 50: D2 (Thursday, May 6), 08:00
  • Garzeno, km 110: D2 (Thursday, May 6), 21:00
  • Plesio, km 131: D3 (Friday, May 7), 08:00
  • Cernobbio – frazione Rovenna, km 187: D4 (Saturday, May 8), 08:00

When runners arrive after cut-offs, collection shuttles are provided for return to Lecco.

Bags of runners withdrawing at life bases may be collected by them if they notify staff at the time of withdrawal.

For all other athletes, their bags will be available at the Lecco finish two hours after the life base closes.

For safety reasons, runners may withdraw only at life bases or aid stations, except for medical emergencies or physical problems requiring medical staff or Mountain Rescue intervention.

In any case, although a shuttle service is provided for withdrawals, because the route covers a very large area, withdrawn runners may wait a considerable time before being collected by the Organization; aid stations and life bases are therefore convenient and safe places to wait for transport.

Any runner withdrawing outside the designated points (aid stations or life bases) by personal choice unrelated to physical problems must arrange their own return, but must immediately notify the number communicated at the briefing and shown on the bib by text message or phone, releasing the Organization from all responsibility in that regard.

To protect participants' health, medical staff at checkpoints or along the route may stop a runner considered unfit to continue.

In this case the runner must follow medical staff instructions, under penalty of immediate disqualification, and follow the above rules for return to Lecco.

All runners who withdraw or miss a cut-off may use all athlete services at the finish.

Art. 8 AID STATIONS, LIFE BASES / WATER POINTS

The race is run in semi-self-sufficiency, with a mandatory water reserve of at least one liter and a minimum food reserve.

Semi-self-sufficiency is the ability to be completely autonomous between two aid stations for food, water reserve, equipment, and safety.

There are 16 aid stations and 3 life bases along the route.

Only runners with a clearly visible bib (and from Plesio, their individual pacers) may access the aid-station buffet.

Food and drink at aid stations may be consumed on site or carried away, but waste must be taken down the mountain, under penalty of disqualification.

Drinking directly from aid-station bottles is prohibited; runners must use their own cups or soft flasks.

Bottles or CamelBaks may be filled with water or other liquids available at the aid station.

When leaving each aid station, runners must have the quantity of water required to reach the next aid station.

An additional food and drink aid station will be available at the finish.

There are fountains along the route where water can be obtained, but they are very infrequent.

We therefore recommend carrying the minimum liquid reserve required to cover the distance between two aid stations.

Mountain huts along the route may also be used, but any purchase of extra food or drink at huts not designated as an “official aid station” is at the runner's expense.

Three life bases are also provided at Colico (km 50), Plesio (km 131), and Cernobbio – frazione Rovenna (km 187).

At these locations, specially equipped facilities will provide water and food supplies with a hot meal, as well as a covered rest area with cots, a restroom and shower area, and a massage area.

The Organization will not impose any mandatory stop, but officials stationed along the route may check runners and stop them in particular conditions or in cases of non-compliance that would clearly jeopardize runner safety.

Art. 9 PACER

Each pacer must register independently on WEDOSPORT, select “PACER,” and state the name of the UTLAC 250 athlete they will accompany and the point at which accompaniment begins. Pacer registration costs €20.00 per person. Each pacer may be assigned to only one athlete and may act as a pacer only for that athlete throughout the event.

The pacer fee includes:

  • PACER identification bib;
  • official race shirt;
  • access to aid stations along the section run with the athlete, with food and drink;
  • access to services at life bases passed with the athlete, including rest area and massage service where available;
  • access to athlete services at the Lecco finish, including finish aid station/final meal and pasta party, changing rooms, showers, and massage service where available.

The pacer fee is a service fee and is not entry into the competition: the pacer is not ranked and is not entitled to the finisher award reserved for UTLAC 250 athletes.

Accompaniment along the route is allowed only through a pacer properly registered under this article. A pacer may begin accompanying only from Plesio Life Base (km 131) and continue from there to the Lecco finish. Up to three pacers in total may be used, but only one at a time.

Pacer changes may be made only at designated points:

  • SAN FEDELE DI INTELVI – km 159
  • CERNOBBIO – FRAZIONE ROVENNA – km 187
  • CIVENNA – km 231

Every pacer must be an adult, properly registered, sign the required waiver, and provide the medical certificate required by the Organization. The pacer must collect their own bib; collection may be delegated to their athlete as communicated by the Organization.

Pacers must enter and leave each aid station together with their athlete and identify themselves to staff with the PACER bib. They may personally use aid stations, but may not enter before their athlete or leave after them.

A pacer may carry their own supplies but may not carry water, food, lamps, shoes, clothing, or other gear for the athlete, nor provide pulling, support, or other mechanical or physical assistance. The pacer's function is companionship, safety, and psychological support.

If the athlete withdraws, the pacer may not continue alone on the race route and may not be reassigned to another athlete.

To the extent compatible, the provisions of the UTLAC 2027 General Rules concerning safety, conduct, and liability apply to pacers.

Art. 10 RUNNER BAG – LIFE BASE BAG

LIFE BASE BAG

  • At bib collection, every runner receives one bag identified with their bib number, for the life bases.
  • The bag may contain change-of-clothes items and anything the runner wishes to find at life bases.
  • The bag must be delivered at the start area in Piazza XX Settembre by 17:30 on May 5, 2027.
  • The Organization transports the bag between life bases and then to the Lecco finish.
  • The bag may be managed directly by a companion or team manager, provided this is communicated to the Organization as specified.
  • Do not put valuables inside: the Organization is not responsible for theft, loss, or damage to the bag or its contents.
  • Bags may be collected at the finish upon presentation of the bib.
  • Uncollected bags will not be mailed home and may be disposed of for hygiene reasons.

FINISH LINE BAG

  • Each runner may leave a personal bag with a change of clothes to retrieve at the finish.
  • The bag must be identified by the label showing the bib number.
  • The bag must be delivered at the start area in Piazza XX Settembre by 17:30 on May 5, 2027.
  • Do not put valuables inside: the Organization is not responsible for theft, loss, or damage to the bag or its contents.
  • The bag may be collected at the finish upon presentation of the bib.
  • Uncollected bags will not be mailed home and may be disposed of for hygiene reasons.

Art. 12 START

  • Start location: Piazza XX Settembre – Lecco.
  • Date: Wednesday, May 5, 2027.
  • Start time: 18:00.
  • Athletes must arrive at the start area sufficiently early to complete pre-race procedures and enter the starting corral as instructed by the Organization.
  • In force majeure circumstances, the Organization reserves the right to make changes that will be communicated to participants.

Art. 13 FINISH SERVICES

A final aid-station service is set up at the finish.

Every runner also has a meal voucher placed on the bib, to be used at Oratorio San Luigi Basilica San Nicolò near the finish area.

Thanks to the partnership with Canottieri Lecco, the Organization is pleased to offer athletes an area dedicated to shower and massage services 500 meters from the finish line.

In addition, Canottieri Lecco provides a sleeping area for runners finishing at night who, for various reasons, cannot reach their accommodation.

Art. 14 TIMING AND LIVE TRACKING

TIMING

  • Timing is provided by WEDOSPORT.
  • The chip is placed on the bib and must be returned at the end of the race if required by the system used.

GPS LIVE TRACKING

  • SeteTrack live tracking is included in the entry fee.
  • SeteTrack GPS devices will be distributed from 17:00 on May 5, 2027, in the start area at Piazza XX Settembre.
  • The device enables live monitoring of the athlete's position along the route.
  • The tracking link will be communicated in the days before the start.
  • Every runner must return the GPS to the Organization at the end of the race or, in case of withdrawal, at the first point indicated by the Organization.

Art. 15 GPS SELF-NAVIGATION

UTLAC 250 is run in GPS SELF-NAVIGATION. The route is not marked with tape and flags like other UTLAC distances and must be followed using the official GPX track provided by the Organization.

  • Every runner must have their own GPS-navigation-capable device (navigator, GPS watch, or smartphone) and know how to use it correctly.
  • The official GPX track and road book will be sent to registered runners and published online within 7 days of the start.
  • The navigation device must have sufficient battery life; the runner must also have charging systems needed to cover sections between one life base and the next.
  • The runner must strictly follow the official track, without shortcuts or course-cutting.
  • Leaving the official route results in disqualification and is entirely at the runner's own risk.
  • Any track changes for safety, weather, or route-impassability reasons will be communicated by the Organization through the means it considers most appropriate.

Art. 16 UTLAC 250 SAFETY PROVISIONS

Organization staff and volunteers will be present along the route in constant contact with race operations.

Ambulances will be stationed at life bases, the start, and the finish.

Mountain Rescue, a race partner for obvious safety reasons, intervenes only in the event of an accident and/or when required by the situation.

Any unnecessary rescue requested by a runner may be charged to that runner if medical staff find that the request was improper.

Race operations are established at Lecco Bione, at the Lecco Mountain Rescue base.

In addition to the rescue team ready to intervene 24/7 by helicopter when needed, Race Operations monitors live tracking 24/7, with staff always reachable at the phone number shown on the bib.

Art. 17 AWARDS AND AWARD CEREMONY

Awards will be presented to the first 5 men and first 5 women.

The award ceremony will take place at the finish, in Piazza XX Settembre in Lecco, at 15:30 on Sunday, May 9.

No award is due to absent recipients.
