Dalco-Montalto: view and race passage between lake and mountain

This guide is part of UTLAC's The area section and is intended for those arriving at Lake Como to race, accompany an athlete, or turn the event into an opportunity to discover the area with their family. Dalco-Montalto represents UTLAC's change of pace well: you leave the more immediate lake behind and enter a geography of mountain balconies, small hamlets, steep roads, and wide horizons. It is not the 'easiest' stop to sell to everyone, but precisely for this reason it can become one of the strongest from an editorial point of view. For those who love high landscapes without necessarily taking on long treks, this area offers a very powerful view over the Upper Lake. It is the kind of place that gives meaning to the idea of following the race as an opportunity to discover side areas, less obvious and much more authentic.

What to see and do

  • the character of a natural balcony above the lake
  • the proximity to routes such as the Via dei Monti Lariani
  • the very clear perception of the mountain landscape of the Upper Lake

Trails, views, and nearby places

  • combine the stop with Trobbio or with the higher hamlets on the slope
  • consider the connection with Montemezzo and the Rifugio Dalco area
  • use this stop to read from above the geography of the entire northwestern shore

Flavors of the area

Here, the food side is decidedly Alpine: polenta, braised meat, alpine cheeses, cured meats, honey, chestnuts, and mushrooms are the most natural references. On race days, it is best to choose simple places, with local cuisine and a more relaxed pace than the lakeshore.

Art, culture, and the identity of the place

Here, the story shifts from lakeside walks to high-altitude villages, mule tracks, and the slow rhythms of small mountain hamlets. It is an area that works very well when you want to show the less obvious side of Lake Como.

How to experience it during UTLAC

During UTLAC, this is the classic point to recommend to those who want a more intense view of the race and the landscape. It is less suited to very quick stops, but very well suited to those who love the Lario mountains and want to take home striking images.
